About Conway’s Life
Conway’s Life is one of the very early cellular automata, invented in 1970 by John Horton Conway while working on a problem posed by John von Neumann. Also known as Conway’s Game of Life, or less commonly simply as Life, what Conway created is almost certainly the best known of cellular automata. One common element from Life, “Gosper’s Glider,” has been adopted as the symbol of hackers by Eric Raymond’s “New Hacker’s Dictionary,” for its ubiquitous recognizability (note that this site uses a glider as its favicon and twitter icon.)
