Alternate Rulesets
Here we maintain a list of alternate rulesets for the Conway’s Life automaton. A number of interesting rulesets, when plugged into the automaton instead of “born 2,3; survive 3″ (usually written 23/3), provide fascinatingly different behavior.
Many of the rulesets used by ConwaysLife.com will only look interesting in a handful of life viewers. The reason is that our application is, essentially, three-dimensional, in the way that the real world is four dimensional, when you consider time; the color of a cell is set by its age, which allows you to see meta-stable islands in patterns.
For a good example of a pattern that looks like noise in an average Conway’s Life client, but which is revealed to be interesting in an age-viewing client, see Forest of Ls, 236/168 .
