Forest of Ls 236/168

Forest of Ls is a rule discovered in 2010 by John Haugeland.  Forest of Ls exhibits very complex behavior, which appears to be noisy static if one does not have the benefit of time coloring.  Forest of Ls has a startling number of very temporary survival patterns, and frequently creates then destroys large, ordered collections of 2×2 squares missing one corner (an “L.”)

Forest of Ls is an exploding pattern, but after the explosion, it is highly chaotic.
